(A Tootsie Chase Mini-Mystery)
A truck at the warehouse was loaded and ready, The weather was cold and the snowfall was steady. Candy canes wrapped and boxed with great care, Would soon be arriving at Little Town Square.
Each cane would be sold for a dollar, you see, Before it was hung on a large Christmas tree. The money collected would buy lots of toys, For all of Little Town’s girls and boys.
When the candy truck driver arrived at the square, A cheer went up from the people there. But a gasp was heard when he opened the door, Empty candy cane boxes littered the floor.
I go by the name of Tootsie Chase, A private detective brought in on the case Of a candy cane thief who has run a-muck. I’ll find the treats quickly, with any luck.
I talked to the driver, who’d stopped once for lunch, Then I talked to the crowd; an informative bunch. With that information I came to see, My list of suspects would number three.
Sweet Tooth Sal
She loves peppermint candy and anything sweet, Especially a Christmas candy cane treat.
Elmer Gruff
He doesn’t like Christmas or children or toys, Or singing or laughter; to him it’s just NOISE!
Miss Nellie Neatly
Her yard is so neat, no litter is there, And she doesn’t like things that clutter Town Square.
I looked all around as I usually do, Searched the back of the truck and found my first clue. There were some empty boxes and a cellophane wrapper Left on the floor by the candy-napper.
Peppermint pieces crunched under my feet, The scene of the crime was not very neat. I noticed some pine needles near the door, That I hadn’t happened to see before.
I left the truck and walked into town, Where Sweet Tooth Sal was just sitting down In the ice cream parlor and I did spy, Her peppermint ice cream cone piled quite high.
Behind the counter Miss Nellie was wiping The dishes; and with a rag she was swiping At puddles of ice cream and crumbs from a cone. I decided to leave Miss Nellie alone.
Then into the shop came Elmer Gruff, Pine pitch on his shoe was quite enough To help me decide which one of the three, Had created this candy cane mystery.
Did you follow the clues? Are you a good sleuth? Like Tootsie Chase, have you guessed the truth? Who emptied the truck? Which suspect might? You just have to click to see if you’re right.
