Sticky Fingers

(A Tootsie Chase Mini-Mystery)

In a country far away,
There is a town called Beetlebay;
Where Mrs. Kingsley owns a store
Like you have never seen before.

Inside the shop, row after row,
There’s candy everywhere you go.
Suckers, gumdrops, chocolate treats,
Everyone buys her scrumptious sweets.

Sitting on a big glass shelf
Is something that she made herself.
A chocolate beetle, so they say,
Like those that fly in Beetlebay.

With chocolate wings and chocolate feet,
This chocolate beetle’s pretty neat.
The sign in front says, “Do Not Touch!”
She likes that beetle, very much.

Then at her summer chocolate sale,
Mrs. Kingsley went quite pale.
Her chocolate beetle, that poor thing,
Was missing one large chocolate wing.

Enter – Tootsie Chase

I go by the name of Tootsie Chase,
A private detective brought in on the case
Of a chocolate beetle that cannot fly.
I need to find the reason why.

At the candy store I saw for myself
Chocolate fingerprints on the beetle’s shelf.
And Mrs. Kingsley and I did agree
That the list of suspects numbered three.

The Suspects

Laura Lynn

Laura’s eight and loves to eat
Chocolate, but she’s very neat.

Jason James

Jason loves beetles, he has a collection.
That’s why we’re looking in his direction.

Timothy Thomas

A mysterious man who wanted to buy
The chocolate beetle and we don’t know why.

Solving the Case

I needed to check out the suspects three,
And Laura Lynn just happened to be
Coming back in the big front door
Of Mrs. Kingsley’s candy store.

She bought four chocolates; ate them all,
Took her time as I recall.
I checked her fingers and her face
And saw no chocolate, not a trace.

Then, outside the window stood
Jason James, and I knew he would
Want to see if the beetle was there.
He peeked inside and pushed back his hair.

It was then I noticed a streak of brown
On his forehead as his fingers came down.
Could that be chocolate? I had to say yes,
As his messy fingers touched the glass.

As I was about to go outside,
Jason James ran away to hide.
But Timothy Thomas came into the store
And tried to buy the beetle once more.

“I’d still like to buy that beetle,” said he,
“Although it’s not what it used to be.
I won’t pay as much for the chocolate thing,
Because your beetle is missing a wing.”

Now you must decide who did the deed.
Was it Laura or Jason or did Timothy need
The wing, so the price of the beetle was less?
Who stole the wing and left the mess?

Did you follow the clues? Are you a good sleuth?
Like Tootsie Chase, have you guessed the truth?
Who took that wing? Which person might?
